Watch the showmedo-video about this HOWTO:

If someone is writing an anonymous comment below your showmedo video, your first reaction is maybe to answer with an comment below his comment. But think of it: How big is the chance that exactly this anonymous commenter will visit the same site again some days later to read your response ? Not so big maybe. A better way to get much deserved feedback is to publish your email address.

Unfortunately , published email-addresses generate a lot of unwanted spam-emails. How to publish the email address in a way that is readable for human beings but not for automatic email-collecting programs ? Make a bitmap graphic out of your email address !

Here is the How To:

Contents

Use an secondary email account

This is an optional step: The reason is that if you receive too much unwanted emails (maybe not everyone loves your video) you can simply *not* check this secondary email account anymore. As long as you like the emails you get, config the secondary email account so that it automatic forwards any email to your real (first) eamil account. There exist several free email account providers, like http://mail.google.com/

create an account in the showmedo wiki

At the top of this screen You should see a blue menu allowing you to create an account for this wiki (join/log in).

setup your wiki user page

This is an optional step: setting up your user page in the wiki. Simply click on your blue username on the top of this screen. Use the edit link to write a bit about of your self. You can also link to uploaded images and make full use of the media wiki syntax. To learn more use the blue Editing help below the edit window.

write your email address

use your favorite text editor or graphic program to do so. Make it beautiful. Remember to turn off the spellchecking feature of your text editor if you see red underlines.

make a screenshot

simply press the print screen key on your keyboard. On most keyboards, this key is located right of the F12 key. Linux users will be promted to save the resulting graphic file. Windows users will have to open a graphic program like paint and press the keys CTRL + V or use the menu commands Edit and Paste.

crop the picture

using your favorite graphic program, you now cut away everything that is not your email address. I suggest using a small program like gthumb for Linux or IrfanView for Windows.

save the cropped picture

using your favorite graphic program, you can now save the resulting smaller graphic. Use the .png format.

upload the graphic

Now, it is time to upload the graphic so that it can be accessed from the internet. If you do not own private webspace, upload the graphic to the showmedo wiki ! I strongly suggest prefixing your wiki username before the graphic filename or the showmedo wiki will be flooded in graphics named myemail.png.

embedding the graphic into the wiki user page

This is an optional step: You can embed the graphic in the showmedo wiki userpage. Click on edit and add the line:

where mygraphicnameonshomedo has to be replaced with the name of the graphic.

get the URL of the graphic

Now it is important to get the real URL from the graphic. If you uploaded into your own webspace, surf to the graphic, right-click on it and choose Copy graphic address. If you uploaded the graphic into the showmedo wiki and do not find it anymore:

  1. click on Special pages on the left
  2. click on Gallery of new files
  3. click on the thumbnail picture of your graphic (to see it in original size)
  4. right-click on the (big) graphic and choose Copy graphic address

embedding the graphic in showmedo's personal page

Now point your browser to www.showmedo.com, login, go to my page and click on Edit personal info In the window where you can edit text, write this line:

.. image:: http://wiki.showmedo.com/images/b/b7/Horstjens_Email.png

where you have to replace http://wiki.showmedo.com/images/b/b7/Horstjens_Email.png with the URL of your graphic or you will get my email address instead of yours.
