What features need adding to ShowMeDo?

Format for Feature Requests
Each feature request needs a Title, Description, and list of Supporters. The more Supporters a request gets, the more obvious it is to Kyran and myself that we need to spend time on it.
Feel free to add requests here but note - requests be proposed in the Google Group (http://groups.google.com/group/showmedo) first for discussion.
Try to sort the features by number of supporters ... most-supported features should be on top
Tell-a-friend email feature
Add an email-box so that a logged-in user can mail a video page to a friend. Will help us to spread the word about videos to friends-of-viewers.

Graph of views-per-day for Videos
We have started to log video-play-events (one event for viewing session) in our database.
Count of views-this-week and views-all-time is already done.
We could also add a graph showing all views since the video was launched, this could help authors understand how marketing efforts affect the number of views they receive. It could also be used to give potential-authors the confidence that their efforts would get an audience.

Email-me-on-new-talk-in-series button
Button for logged-in users so that when a video is added to the series the user gets a notification email. Helps us to keep track of new videos that are added without watching the site or RSS feeds all the time.

Email-me-on-new-talk-by-author button
Similar to "Email-me-on-new-talk-in-series button" for logged-in users. Will be more useful when more of our first-time authors become repeat-authors. The database can check how many people want notifications which can be shown to an author as a measure of interest, this might encourage authors to create new series.

Post-video Questionnaire
Poll at the end of a video:
- What did you like about this Video?
- Did you learn anything new from it?
- What would you want added to this or the next Video?

Simple Feedback Buttons
Rather than requiring a viewer to create a well-worded comment and in addition to the current Voting method, we could add some simple buttons expressing common-feedback ideas for logged-in users:
- 'More on this topic by any author'
- 'More from this speaker'
- 'Audio problem' (just so other people know that this is noted)
- 'Out of date content' (helps to notify us that we should deprecate a video/series)
- 'Unreadable text'
- 'Video too short/long' (as a speaker I always struggle with this)
- 'Content too dense/sparse' (again, whether to firehose them with info or go slow)
- 'Description needs expansion' (often authors don't write enough for Google to index)

Sorting videos by language
There might be some (German) viewers who don't understand English very well and are thus unable to access the German videos on the site. It would help them a lot if they could after clicking a button on the front page view all German videos (maybe that button should also feature the German flag(?)). The same could be done for other languages once we've got ShowMeDo's recorded in them.

People who viewed this also viewed...
Since we now log the videos that a user actually watches (as opposed to pages they view) we can begin to profile and offer suggested videos. This will be more useful to new users who don't know the breadth of content that is available I think. Similar to Amazon's book recommendation system.

Support for Subtitles
I would love to have full support for subtitles. Authors should be encouraged to publish subtitle-file (a text file, .srt format or other) together with the video. Subtitle file(s) should be downloadable from the same site as the video. Users can easy translate subtitle file into different languages and upload the subtitle file again. Idea: "Translate and email"- link direct under video to encourage users.
The difficult part is what to do next.
- Let the users figure out how to play the desired subtitle with his video player software: (less comfortabel for the user, less work for showmedo)
- provide different versions of the video with the subtitle(s) already in-build (more comfortable for the user,more work for showmedo)
Even if only one (English) subtitle for a (English) video is provided it would help non-fluent-English-speakers very much to understand the video. (Reading is less difficult than listening). Further more, not each author get the audio quality right on his first videos and not every users can use sound while watching the videos.
update: the new source-code box looks like a perfect space to hold an .srt file

Suggested Video
The site could suggest a video that the user hasn't yet seen based on the following criteria:
- not seen
- related to videos that user has seen (using Votes as a sign of interest?)
- higher chance of showing a newer video/one with many votes
The user might like this if they have a few bored minutes and they want an idea of what else they might want to watch.

resize/(re)move video request box
I'm suspecting the big "requests & vote" box above the comments form to confuse watchers instead of inviting them to write comments below a video. Users not familiar with showmedo are maybe unable to find out that the site has to be scrolled down to see a comment form.
Suggestion: Make the "request" box really small (just 2 lines), maybe expandable if clicked. Or, move it to the side instead and remove it from the current position.

Proposals for Voting
As an author I'd like to be able to ask users if they are interested in me making a video about a topic *before* I invest the time making the series.
I often wonder if there is a true demand for the subjects I could cover or, with a bit of effort, could I make an even more useful series?
With the 'proposals for voting' we'd get to post questions to the video pages which logged-in users can vote For or Against. We could then use this method to email supportive users to further refine the ideas for the series.
We could certainly use this method to decide if 1 of several ideas is more popular and parhaps is a better investment of time or if an idea has only limited appeal (and perhaps should be reconsidered).

Restricting requests to registered users
Hey, I think I'd be quite a good idea to only allow registered users to make new requests. That way we don't end up having too many requests (which can't be fullfilled) + we have yet another incentive for people to join ShowMeDo!

Editing series information part
At the moment it is only possible to edit the description of the video. I wish for an button that let me edit the description of the series.

Change "cover" picture of video
I would love an option to change the first picture of a video. The pictore in witch the white triangle is displayed to start the video. Sometimes i did not timed the record function right of my screencast software, somtimes a different picture of the video stream is far better to advertise viewers to my video. I suggest that the "cover" picture of the video must be taken from within the video itself. If we allow any picture, showmedo will be flooded with pictures of popular actresses -in no way realated to the video content- to gain attraction. Of course i suggest this restriction only because i bet that i have the most attractive students/authors on showmedo :-))

Add better protection to wiki for antispam behaviour
Media wiki has captchas and the like (http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Spam) for antispam behaviour, I need to implement some to protect our wiki

Syncronize wiki user login/password/mypage with showmedo user/password/userinfo
When creating a new user at showmedo, it would be nice when the same user (same login, same password) would be created for the showmedo wiki. Also the "edit personal info" should be auto-copyed into the wiki userpage or at least a link to the showmedo "personal info" should be automatic set. Also automatic link from mypage or personal info toward wiki user page.
allow tagging of all videos for all authors
every logged-in author should be allowed to add/(edit) tags of other authors's videos.
